Satellite presents Automata Factory, a solo exhibition of wood, metal, and paper automata by Seokyeon Lee. Automata Factory is his first-ever solo exhibition in Korea.

Automata (the plural of automaton) are simple machines. They are dolls come to life through mechanical motion, usually up and down, but especially turning around and around.

In Seokyeon Lee’s fanciful, carefully researched, and finely assembled creatures, this circular movement is a metaphor for the wheel of life, curiously conjoined with dolls, and also spirits who occupy the netherworld between the living and the dead in Korean shamanism. Combining his fascination with paradoxes in Korean culture, a boy-like wonder at tinkering and making, and a maniacal attention to detail, Lee refers to his creations as “dead flowers brought to life.”
